EXPLORING THERMAL - Fox

Selecting the Right Thermal for Fox Hunting: Considerations for choosing a scope and monocular for fox hunting:

  1. Scope Considerations:

    • Match base magnification to shooting distance, considering foxes' small size and tendency to be at longer distances.
    • Opt for a 50Hz refreshing sensor for quick and responsive tracking, as a 25Hz refresh rate may not keep up with foxes' swift movements.
    • A 384 sensor is preferred, providing more native base magnification than an equivalent 640 scope, enhancing target visibility.
  2. Scope Selection Based on Shooting Distance:

    • Under 200 meters: A 640 scope with a 12-micron sensor at around 2.8 magnification or a 384 scope with at least 3.5 magnification.
    • Below 150 meters: A 384 scope with 3 magnification.
    • Above 200 meters: A 384 scope with at least 4 magnification.
  3. Monocular Selection:

    • Lens size or focal length of 35mm and higher for spotting beyond 300 meters.
    • 25mm for spotting under 300 meters to balance target detection distance with field of view.
  4. Consideration for Monocular Lens Size:

    • Smaller lens for wider field of view, but avoid magnifications lower than 2.5 for effective detection and identification, especially when foxes are small and low to the ground.

By aligning hunting efforts with specific periods and employing the right equipment, hunters contribute to environmental conservation while effectively managing the red fox population.
