What barrel twist rates work best with the Hornady 52 grain BTHP Match bullets?

The 52 grain BTHP bullets are exceptionally versatile and stabilise very effectively in slower, traditional twist barrels like 1:12 or 1:14 inches, which are commonly found on classic .222 Remington and .22-250 varmint rifles. They also perform accurately in modern faster twists such as 1:9, 1:8, and 1:7 inches, though handloaders should note that extremely fast twist barrels running max-velocity loads may push very light bullets hard.

What is the ideal effective working range for the Hornady .224 52 grain BTHP bullets?

These bullets are engineered primarily for short- to medium-distance match shooting, typically shining between 100 metres and 300 metres. Due to their modest G1 ballistic coefficient of 0.229, they become significantly more susceptible to crosswinds if stretched out past 400 metres. Shooters targeting distances from 500 m to 1,000 m should instead transition to heavier, high-BC match projectiles.

Are there any specific Australian legal requirements or compliance certificates needed to purchase these bullets?

As unprimed, inert reloading projectiles, these bullets do not contain gunpowder or primers, meaning electrical standards such as 240V mains or SAA/RCM certifications do not apply. However, under Australian state and territory regulations, particularly in regions like Western Australia or New South Wales, licensed firearms dealers may be required to verify an appropriate firearms licence matching the .224 calibre before supplying the components.

What equipment is recommended for setting up and seating these bullets during reloading?

To get started with handloading this 6000-pack efficiently, you can pair your reloading press with reliable single-stage equipment such as the Lee Precision 90045 Reloader Single Stage Press. Using quick-change components like the Hornady Lock-N-Load Quick Change Die Bushing 2 Pack will also streamline your workflow when swapping seating and crimping dies.

Match Bullets - Hornady 2249B

The Hornady Match™ 22 Cal .224" 52 Grain BTHP bullet (model 2249B) is an inert, precision-swaged component engineered for handloading match-grade centerfire rifle ammunition. Designed with a secant ogive profile and a boat tail hollow point configuration, this projectile is supplied in a factory bulk pack of 6,000 to support high-volume reloading. It is compatible with standard .224-calibre rifle cartridges, including .223 Remington / 5.56×45mm NATO, .222 Remington, .22-250 Remington, .220 Swift, and .22 Nosler.

AMP® Jacket Construction: Features Advanced Manufacturing Process copper alloy jackets with near-zero wall thickness variation and minimal runout, delivering the concentricity and dynamic balance required for consistent group sizes.
Secant Ogive Profile: Optimises bearing surface engagement and reduces aerodynamic drag for flatter trajectories and improved stability across short- to medium-range shooting disciplines.
Broad Twist Rate Compatibility: At 52 grains, this profile stabilises reliably in slow-twist barrels such as 1:12" and 1:14", while remaining fully compatible with modern 1:9", 1:8", and 1:7" twist rates.
High-Volume Pack Size: Supplied in an unprimed 6,000-count bulk quantity (2249B), reducing per-unit loading costs for competitive clubs, service rifle competitors, and volume handloaders.

Who is the Hornady .224 52 Grain BTHP Match Bullets 6000 Pack for?

Short- to medium-range benchrest and target match shooters — requires consistent concentricity from a .224 inches diameter, 52 grains projectile that stabilises effectively across 100 m to 300 m match targets, particularly in traditional 1:12" or 1:14" twist barrels that cannot stabilise heavier-for-calibre bullets.
Handloaders seeking bulk .224 projectiles for pest and varmint control — benefits from a high-capacity 6,000-count pack of flat-shooting reloading rifle match bullets featuring a 0.229 G1 ballistic coefficient for precise shot placement out to moderate field distances.

Less suitable for: Long-range target disciplines shooting at 500 m to 1,000 m where a G1 ballistic coefficient of 0.229 is more vulnerable to wind drift; handloaders competing at these extended ranges are better served by heavier-for-calibre 68-grain to 90-grain match bullets engineered specifically for fast-twist barrels.
