Are these Hornady 87 grain BTHP bullets suitable for hunting medium game like fallow or red deer?

No, these projectiles are explicitly designed as thin-skinned varmint bullets featuring rapid, explosive expansion and fragmentation upon impact. They lack the structural integrity and deep penetration required for medium to large Australian game like deer or heavy feral pigs, making them unsuitable and ethically inappropriate for those species.

What barrel twist rate is required to reliably stabilise the Hornady 87 grain BTHP in a .243 Winchester rifle?

With an overall bullet length of 1.053 inches, this 87-grain projectile requires a barrel twist rate of 1:10 inches or faster (such as 1:9 or 1:8) to achieve optimal stability and match-grade accuracy. Rifles with twist rates slower than 1:10 cannot stabilise this bullet reliably, which can lead to keyholing downrange.

Do I need a firearms licence to purchase these reloading bullets from XHunter in Australia?

While these projectiles are unprimed components that do not contain gunpowder, retail and shipping compliance across Australian states and territories requires purchasers to adhere to relevant local firearms legislation. Depending on your specific state or territory, you may need to present or hold a valid firearms licence for the purchase of reloading components.

What kind of accuracy and downrange performance can I expect when handloading this 6mm projectile?

Handloaders commonly achieve sub-MOA precision out past 400 yards with this bullet, benefiting from its aerodynamic 0.376 G1 ballistic coefficient and boat tail profile. The combination of the 87-grain weight and match-grade AMP copper jacket ensures a flat trajectory and reduced drag for precision predator control and club target shooting.

6mm Bullets - Hornady 2442

The Hornady .243 6mm 87 Grain BTHP Bullets (100 Pack) are component reloading projectiles engineered for varmint hunting and precision target shooting. Built with a boat tail hollow point profile, a swaged lead core, and Hornady's AMP copper jacket, these bullets provide a flat trajectory and explosive terminal fragmentation upon impact. They are unprimed, inert reloading components intended for handloading across popular 6mm cartridges, including .243 Winchester, 6mm Creedmoor, 6mm ARC, 6mm BR, and .240 Weatherby Magnum.

Key Features

Boat Tail Hollow Point Design: Combines a streamlined boat tail base with an aerodynamic hollow point cavity to minimise aerodynamic drag and maintain downrange velocity.
Rapid Fragmentation: Features a thin jacket paired with an open cavity that initiates violent, immediate expansion across typical hunting velocities, making it highly effective on thin-skinned pests.
AMP Copper Jacket: Incorporates Advanced Manufacturing Process jacket technology to deliver near-zero wall thickness variation, supporting sub-MOA group precision beyond 400 yards (365 m).
High Sectional Density and Ballistics: Delivers a 0.376 G1 ballistic coefficient and 0.210 sectional density for consistent external ballistics in field and club target conditions.

Who is the Hornady .243 87 Grain BTHP Bullets 100 Pack for?

Varmint and Predator Handloaders — Loading for .243 Winchester or 6mm Creedmoor rifles to target foxes, wild dogs, and rabbits benefits from this 6mm varmint reloading bullet's 87-grain weight and 0.376 G1 ballistic coefficient, which maintain extended-range velocity while initiating rapid, explosive fragmentation on impact.
Club Match and Precision Target Shooters — Handloading for tight paper groupings requires the uniform AMP jacket and 1.053-inch overall bullet length of these 0.243-inch diameter BTHP projectiles, providing sub-MOA consistency in standard 1:10" or faster twist barrels.

Less suitable for: Hunters targeting medium to large game such as deer or heavy feral pigs, which require deep penetration rather than the rapid, explosive fragmentation of this thin-jacketed varmint projectile; heavier, controlled-expansion or monolithic hunting bullets are required instead. Additionally, it is unsuitable for rifles with barrel twist rates slower than 1:10", which cannot reliably stabilise this 1.053-inch long bullet.
