The Norma 8x57 JS 196gr Oryx factory rifle ammunition is engineered for medium to large game hunting in varied field conditions. Featuring a 196 gr (12.7 g) chemically bonded soft point projectile with a flat-base design and graduated jacket thickness, it delivers controlled mushrooming and high weight retention—typically between 90% and 99%—to achieve deep penetration through dense muscle and heavy bone. Loaded into reloadable brass cases with boxer primers, this cartridge produces a muzzle velocity of 770 m/s (2,526 fps) and 3,765 J of muzzle energy from a standard 610 mm test barrel.

Key Features

• Bonded Core Construction: Chemically bonds the lead core to the copper jacket to eliminate core-jacket separation and retain 90% to 99% of its residual weight upon impact.
• Controlled Expansion: Features internal splitting zones and a thinner forward jacket to initiate rapid mushrooming followed by sustained terminal penetration.
• Full Power C.I.P. Loading: Formulated to European C.I.P. maximum service pressure limits (56,565 psi) for reliable cycling and consistent terminal energy.
• Reloadable Componentry: Loaded with boxer-primed, premium Norma brass cases suitable for repeated reloading cycles.

Who is the Norma 8x57 JS 196gr Oryx for?

• Medium to Large Game Hunters — requires dependable knock-down performance on feral pigs, red deer, fallow deer, and sambar, utilising this 8x57 JS rifle ammunition to deliver 3,765 J of muzzle energy at 770 m/s (2,526 fps) with a bonded 196 gr (12.7 g) bullet built for deep tissue penetration.
• 8x57 JS Rifle Shooters — operates modern or classic .323-inch (8.20 mm) bore bolt-action rifles optimised for close to mid-range woodland stalking, zeroed around the factory Most Recommended Distance of 153 m (168 yards) supported by a 0.331 (G1) ballistic coefficient.

Less suitable for: Long-range shooting beyond 300 metres where velocity drops to 531 m/s, where a flatter-shooting, higher-BC cartridge or specialised long-range boat-tail projectile fits better; smaller quarry below 70 kg, where conventional lighter or rapidly fragmenting non-bonded bullets are more suitable; or older .318 inch (8x57 J) bore rifles due to excessive pressure risks.
