What is the effective operating range for the S&B .458 405 Grain Soft Point bullets?

These projectiles are engineered for short- to medium-range hunting, performing best at distances under 150 to 200 yards. When loaded in a .45-70 Government cartridge at a nominal muzzle velocity of 1,509 fps and zeroed at 100 yards, the bullet drop reaches -17.5 inches at 200 yards, making lighter Spitzer projectiles better suited for extended ranges beyond 200 yards.

Are these Sellier & Bellot bullets compatible with standard .45 ACP handgun reloading?

No, these bullets feature a .458-inch calibre diameter specifically designed for rifle cartridges such as the .45-70 Government, .458 SOCOM, and .458 Winchester Magnum. They are strictly incompatible with standard .45-calibre handgun barrels, which typically measure between .451 and .452 inches.

Do I need an Australian firearms licence to purchase these reloading bullets from XHunter?

While these inert projectiles do not contain any primer, powder, or case and therefore do not require an explosives transport licence, purchasing and shipping restrictions on reloading components may apply depending on your state or territory firearms legislation. State registries or retail policies may mandate the presentation of a valid Australian firearms licence prior to dispatch.

What kind of terminal performance can I expect from the 405-grain soft point design on big game?

The bullet features a classic drawn CuZn 10 tombac jacket over a lead core with an exposed flat soft lead nose. This construction is engineered for rapid, controlled hydraulic expansion and deep penetration while retaining weight upon impact, making it ideal for close-range bush hunting on heavy game like feral scrub bulls, buffalo, and Sambar deer.

.458 Reloading Bullets - S&B V338582

The Sellier & Bellot .458 405 Grain Soft Point (SP) projectile (Model V338582 / Drawing No. 2948) is an inert reloading bullet engineered for short- to medium-range hunting applications. Featuring an exposed lead core encased in a drawn CuZn 10 tombac jacket (90% copper, 10% zinc), this heavy 405-grain (26.2-gram) projectile delivers controlled expansion, deep penetration, and high weight retention upon impact. Specifically tailored for the .45-70 Government cartridge as well as compatible .458-calibre platforms, it operates within an optimal working range inside 150 yards, delivering reliable terminal performance at traditional lever-action muzzle velocities between 1,300 and 1,800 fps.

Key Features

Heavy Hunting Profile: Delivers 405 grains (26.2 grams) of projectile mass designed for maximum knockdown power and deep straight-line penetration through thick muscle and bone.
Semi-Jacketed Construction: Built with a CuZn 10 jacket and an exposed flat lead nose to provide reliable, hydraulic-driven expansion while resisting core-jacket separation.
Optimised Calibre Sizing: Machined precisely to a .458-inch (11.63 mm) diameter for consistent chambering and gas-sealing in .458-bore rifle barrels.
Trajectory Dynamics: Features a G1 ballistic coefficient of 0.306, calibrated for flat point-of-aim performance inside 150 yards when loaded to typical .45-70 Government specifications.
Packaging: Supplied in convenient retail boxes of 30 projectiles per pack.

Who is the S&B Sellier & Bellot .458 45 Caliber 405 Grain Bullet 30 Pack for?

Hunters targeting feral scrub bulls and buffalo with .45-70 Government cartridges at close bush ranges — Relies on a massive 405-grain bullet weight and a .458 in calibre diameter to deliver maximum momentum and deep terminal penetration against heavy, thick-skinned game within 150 yards.
Handloaders seeking traditional heavy-bullet performance for Sambar deer and feral boars — Utilises this 405-grain reloading rifle bullet featuring an exposed soft lead nose and a 0.306 G1 ballistic coefficient to achieve controlled, rapid expansion at classic lever-action impact velocities.

Less suitable for: Engagement distances exceeding 150 to 200 yards where bullet drop accelerates (-17.5 inches at 200 yards and -59.8 inches at 300 yards), which are better served by lighter, higher-velocity Spitzer or boat-tail rifle bullets; and handloaders loading standard .45-calibre handgun cartridges requiring .451 to .452 in diameter projectiles.
