The ThermTec Wild 650L Thermal Monocular (Model OPTT-Wild650L) is a handheld thermal imaging monocular engineered for long-range target detection and accurate range measurement in open country. Built around a 640 × 512 uncooled VOx sensor with a 12 µm pixel pitch and high sub-18 mK thermal sensitivity, it pairs with a 50 mm / F0.9 objective lens to detect heat signatures up to 2,600 metres away. The device features an integrated Class 1 laser rangefinder that measures target distances up to 1,000 metres with ±1 m accuracy. Housed in an IP67-rated weather-sealed body, it delivers thermal imagery through a 1024 × 768 AMOLED display and operates across an environmental envelope of -20°C to +50°C.
Key Features
- Integrated Laser Rangefinder: Combines hardware LRF capabilities accurate from 5 m to 1,000 m with AI-assisted distance estimation.
- High-Sensitivity Optical Core: Equipped with a 640 × 512, 12 µm sensor with NETD ≤ 18 mK and a fast 50 mm / F0.9 lens for detection out to 2,600 metres.
- Single-Handed Control Layout: Features a central top finger-wheel focus and joystick navigation designed for ambidextrous, one-handed operation in total darkness.
- Continuous AI Calibration: Adapts non-uniformity correction dynamically to ambient scenes to reduce screen freeze during active scanning.
- Swappable Power System: Powered by a removable 18650 Li-ion battery providing up to 8 hours of continuous runtime, backed by 5V USB-C in-device charging.
- Onboard Storage and Connectivity: Includes 64 GB of internal memory for captured media and connects to the ThermTec Outdoor App via Wi-Fi hotspot for live viewing and updates.

Who is the Thermtec Wild 650l Thermal Monocular for?
- Long-range open-country deer hunters — requires the 2,600 metres maximum detection range provided by the 50 mm / F0.9 objective lens and sub-18 mK thermal sensitivity to identify game across expansive valleys, while using the integrated 1,000 m laser rangefinder to confirm exact shooting distances before stalking.
- Pest control operators targeting wild dogs and pigs — uses the high-resolution 640 × 512 sensor core and 2.8× base optical magnification of this thermal imaging monocular to spot and distinguish predatory pests at medium-to-long engagement distances between 150 m and 2,000+ m across open paddocks.
- Rural property surveillance and livestock monitors — relies on the 8-hour swappable 18650 battery life and 1,000 m laser rangefinder in this thermal monocular to monitor perimeter boundary lines and assess livestock health in low-visibility environments down to -20°C.
Less suitable for: Close-quarters scanning under 50 m in dense scrub or tight timber, where the narrow 8.8° field of view is restrictive and a dedicated wide-angle thermal monocular with a 25 mm or 35 mm lens is better suited; or direct firearm mounting, as this unit is an unrated handheld device and firearm-mounted applications require a dedicated recoil-rated thermal weapon scope.
