What is the recommended zeroing distance for the Norma 308 Win 180gr Plastic Point to achieve optimal performance?

Norma recommends a most recommended distance (MRD) zeroing of 159 metres (175 yards) for this 180-grain load. At this range, the 0.366 G1 ballistic coefficient projectile delivers its peak expansion and energy transfer, with a muzzle velocity of 796 m/s.

How does the plastic point design prevent bullet deformation during magazine feeding?

The recessed polymer tip protects the soft lead nose from flattening or deforming against the front of the magazine during rapid cycling and heavy recoil in .308 Winchester platforms. This ensures consistent ballistic coefficients and reliable accuracy shot after shot.

At what distance should I consider switching to a higher-BC boat-tail projectile instead of this Plastic Point round?

Norma explicitly advises switching to higher-BC, boat-tail projectiles for long-range applications exceeding 200 to 300 metres. Because the 180gr Plastic Point has a G1 ballistic coefficient of 0.366, it is specifically optimised for close-to-medium hunting ranges rather than extended-distance shooting.

What licensing requirements apply when purchasing this centerfire ammunition in Australia?

In Australia, centerfire rifle ammunition is classified as controlled explosive ammunition. Acquisition requires a valid Australian State or Territory firearms licence featuring the appropriate Category B or applicable endorsement matching the .308 Win calibre, along with compliance for local transport regulations.

308 Win Ammo - Norma 20176282

The Norma Plastic Point .308 Winchester 180gr ammunition is engineered for medium-to-large game hunting at close to medium ranges. Featuring a 180-grain (11.7 g) tipped soft-point projectile, this cartridge combines rapid energy transfer with immediate expansion upon impact. The polymer tip sits recessed within the jacket to prevent point deformation inside the magazine caused by recoil during rapid cycling, maintaining consistent exterior ballistics from shot to shot.

Recoil-Resistant Nose: The recessed plastic tip protects the bullet core from flattening under magazine recoil, ensuring aerodynamic integrity.
Rapid Expansion: Engineered with an exposed forward section that triggers rapid expansion and hydrostatic shock on game.
Optimised Trajectory: Factory tuned for a standard zero (MRD) of 159 metres (175 yards), making it suited for hunting ranges up to approximately 150 to 200 metres.
Packaging: Boxed in quantities of 20 centerfire cartridges.

Who is the Norma Plastic Point .308 Win 180gr for?

Wild Boar and Feral Pig Hunters — requires the 3,707 J of muzzle energy and immediate expansion of this 180-grain .308 Winchester hunting ammunition to deliver immediate knockdown power on tough-bodied pests at close to medium ranges.
Medium-to-Large Deer Hunters — relies on the 796 m/s muzzle velocity and 159-metre most recommended distance (MRD) of this .308 Winchester hunting ammunition for flat, reliable performance within standard 150 to 200-metre bush-stalking distances.

Less suitable for: Long-range shooting exceeding 200 to 300 metres, where higher-BC boat-tail projectiles are better suited, or heavy, thick-skinned dangerous game requiring bonded or monolithic deep-penetrating bullets.
