The Norma Whitetail .308 Winchester 180gr Soft Point ammunition (MPN 20177592) is a dedicated centrefire cartridge designed for medium to large game hunting. Built with an exposed lead tip and an expanding core, this flat-base soft point bullet produces uniform mushrooming and deep penetration on heavy-bodied game. Firing from a 610 mm test barrel, it achieves a muzzle velocity of 2,612 fps (796 m/s) and delivers 2,726 ft-lbs (3,707 J) of muzzle energy, maintaining an effective hunting payload of 1,551 ft-lbs (1,988 J) out to 200 metres.

Key Features

• Controlled Mushrooming: Jacketed soft point design with an exposed lead core delivers rapid expansion without premature fragmentation.
• High Energy Transfer: Heavy 180-grain projectile delivers substantial knock-down energy, maintaining 1,970 fps at 200 metres.
• Reloadable Norma Brass: Loaded into boxer-primed, premium reloadable brass cases manufactured to strict dimensional tolerances.
• Optimised for Standard Barrels: 180gr bullet weight stabilises reliably in centrefire rifles with 1:10" to 1:11" barrel twist rates.

Who is the Norma Whitetail 308 Win 180gr SP for?

• Sambar, Red, and Rusa deer hunters — provides the heavy 180 grains projectile mass and 2,726 ft-lbs of muzzle energy needed to achieve deep vital penetration through thick muscle and heavy bone on large Australian deer.
• Large feral pig hunters — delivers 2,076 ft-lbs of energy at 100 metres with an expanding soft point bullet, ensuring immediate knockdown on thick-shielded boars at typical bushland engagement ranges.
• Scrub bull hunters — utilizes .308 Winchester factory loading that generates 2,612 fps muzzle velocity to drive a heavy-jacketed lead core deep into heavy-framed feral cattle.

Less suitable for: Extended long-range hunting beyond 300 to 400 metres, where the 0.257 G1 ballistic coefficient sheds velocity rapidly; streamlined boat-tail hunting bullets are better suited for long-distance wind drift resistance and trajectory retention.
