Can I use the Sellier & Bellot 5.6x52R 70 Grain ammunition in a standard .223 Remington or .22-250 rifle?

No, this is completely incompatible. The S&B 5.6x52R utilizes a rimmed case and a distinct .228-inch projectile diameter, unlike standard modern .224-inch centerfire rifles. Attempting to chamber it in a non-rimmed or standard .224 bore will cause severe feeding failures and dangerous pressure spikes.

What is the maximum recommended effective range for hunting with this 70-grain soft point round?

While Sellier & Bellot calculates a Most Recommended Distance zero of 170 metres, performance drops significantly beyond 200 to 250 metres. Past this threshold, terminal energy falls below 700 J and bullet drop accelerates rapidly, making it unsuitable for long-range target or game engagements.

What size game animals are suitable for the 70-grain Soft Point bullet terminal ballistics?

This ammunition is specifically engineered for small-to-medium game weighing under 50 kg, such as roe deer, feral goats, foxes, and dingoes. On larger medium game exceeding 50 kg, the 70-grain projectile lacks sufficient terminal penetration for reliable broadside vitals.

What licensing requirements apply when purchasing this ammunition in Australia?

Under Australian state and territory firearms legislation, you must hold a valid Category B firearms licence with a matching calibre endorsement to purchase and own this ammunition. Ammunition must either be collected directly in-store or freighted via licensed Dangerous Goods carriers.

5.6x52R Soft Point Ammo - S&B V330412

The Sellier & Bellot 5.6×52 R (.22 Savage Hi-Power) SP 70 Grain Centerfire Rifle Ammunition delivers reliable factory-loaded performance for classic lever-action rifles and European break-action platforms. Loaded with a 70-grain (4.60 g) semi-jacketed soft point projectile featuring an exposed lead tip and an Fe/CuZn 10 alloy metallic jacket, this cartridge achieves a muzzle velocity of 872 m/s (2,861 fps) and 1,749 J of muzzle energy from a standard 600 mm test barrel. Designed specifically for firearms requiring a rimmed case and a true 0.228-inch bullet diameter, it provides controlled expansion and rapid energy transfer for small-to-medium game hunting within moderate distances.

Key Features

Controlled Soft Point Expansion: The semi-jacketed bullet (#2915) combines an exposed lead core with a metallic jacket to ensure consistent mushrooming and terminal weight retention on impact.
Heritage Firearm Support: Factory-manufactured to original specifications to sustain classic vintage rifles such as the Savage Model 99, as well as European combination guns and drillings.
Reloadable Quality Components: Assembled in standard, non-corrosive Boxer-primed factory brass cases with an overall cartridge length of 63.00 mm.
Trajectory & Ballistic Performance: Delivers a G1 ballistic coefficient of 0.264 (G7 of 0.132) and maintains 1,314 J of energy at 100 metres and 968 J at 200 metres.

Who is the S&B Sellier & Bellot 5.6x52r/22 Savage Hi-Power 70 Grain Sp Ammo 20 Rd for?

Classic Savage Model 99 Owners — Requires the specific 0.228 in projectile diameter and rimmed brass profile that standard .224 centerfire ammunition cannot safely provide in vintage .22 Savage Hi-Power chambers.
European Break-Action Hunters — Utilises a dedicated 5.6x52R rimmed case engineered for positive extraction in drillings, Kipplauf single-shots, and combination guns, pushing a 70 grains soft point at 872 m/s muzzle velocity.
Small-to-Medium Game Hunters — Provides 20 cartridges per box of controlled-expansion soft point ammunition delivering 968 J of retained energy at 200 m for harvesting feral goats, wild dogs, dingoes, and foxes.

Less suitable for: Target game exceeding 50 kg or long-range shooting beyond 200 to 250 metres where energy drops below 700 J; larger deer species require larger-calibre centerfire ammunition such as .243 Winchester or .30-calibre rounds, while modern high-BC .224 varmint cartridges better serve extended long-range pest control. It is strictly incompatible with standard .224-inch bore rifles and non-rimmed chambers.
