Can I use this S&B 250 Grain LFN ammunition safely in my vintage lever-action rifle or modern reproduction revolver?

Yes, this ammunition is loaded to standard SAAMI and CIP low-pressure thresholds, making it fully compatible with standard-pressure modern reproduction revolvers like Uberti and Pietta, vintage firearms, and lever-action carbines such as the Winchester 1873 or Marlin 1894. It is designed with a Lead Flat Nose (LFN) geometry that ensures safe feeding in tubular magazines without risking primer ignition. However, it is not interchangeable with .45 ACP or high-pressure .454 Casull chambers.

What kind of ballistics and effective range can I expect from these 45 Long Colt rounds?

The S&B 250 grain load delivers a muzzle velocity of approximately 216 m/s (around 708 fps) and a muzzle energy of 378 Joules. It is optimized for short-to-medium distances, typically performing best between 0 and 50 metres, where a 25-metre zero drops by roughly 12.1 cm at 50 metres. Because of its lower muzzle energy of 279 ft-lbs, it is suitable for target shooting and Cowboy Action competitions rather than medium or large game hunting.

What are the legal requirements for purchasing and transporting this ammunition in Australia?

To purchase and possess this ammunition in Australia, you must hold a valid State or Territory Firearms Licence with the appropriate calibre endorsement, such as a Category H licence for handguns or Category A/B for lever-action rifles. Additionally, because it contains dangerous goods, it cannot be sent through standard domestic postal services and must comply with specific freight and transport regulations.

Are these cartridges suitable for indoor shooting ranges that have lead restrictions?

No, these cartridges feature an unjacketed, exposed lead alloy bullet and non-corrosive Boxer-primed brass casings. If your local indoor shooting facility enforces strict full-metal-jacket (FMJ) only bullet mandates or has specific airborne lead mitigation policies, you will need to use a fully jacketed alternative rather than these lead flat nose rounds.

45 Colt Ammunition - Sellier & Bellot V311792

The Sellier & Bellot .45 Colt (Long Colt) 250 Grain LFN Ammunition is standard-pressure factory ammunition engineered for historic revolvers, modern reproductions, and pistol-calibre lever-action carbines. Loaded with an unjacketed 250-grain (16.20-gram) Lead Flat Nose projectile, this ammunition delivers a muzzle velocity of 216 m/s (709 fps) and a muzzle energy of 378 Joules (279 ft-lbs). The low-pressure loading conforms to standard CIP/SAAMI thresholds, generating mild, controllable recoil suited for single-action Western disciplines and high-volume target practice.

Key Features

Tubular Magazine Safety: The flat meplat on the Lead Flat Nose (LFN) profile prevents projectile tips from resting against adjacent primers, ensuring safe cycling through tubular-magazine lever-action firearms.
Target Scoring: The lead flat nose geometry punches clean, defined holes in paper targets and provides reliable energy transfer on steel silhouettes.
Reloadable Components: Built with non-corrosive Boxer primers and boxer-primed brass cases that can be reloaded for continued shooting.
Short-to-Medium Range Trajectory: Optimised for engagements out to 50 metres, maintaining a velocity of 209 m/s and 353 Joules of energy at the 50-metre mark.

Who is the S&B Sellier & Bellot 45 Long Colt 250 Grain Lfn Ammo 50 Rd for?

Cowboy Action Shooting competitors — Requires safe tubular magazine feeding and manageable stage recoil, provided by this .45 Colt ammunition's 250-grain flat nose profile and moderate 216 m/s muzzle velocity.
Recreational target shooters using vintage or reproduction firearms — Requires factory loads safe for standard-pressure cylinders and actions, delivered by this 45 Long Colt handgun ammunition at a mild 378 Joules of muzzle energy across a 50-round box count.

Less suitable for: Shooters requiring ammunition for medium or large game hunting, as the 378 Joules (279 ft-lbs) muzzle energy output falls below humane big-game hunting requirements (which require high-pressure hunting cartridges or heavy rifle calibres producing over 1,300 Joules), indoor facilities enforcing non-exposed lead rules (which require full-metal-jacket or total metal jacket ammunition), or firearms chambered specifically for .45 ACP or .454 Casull.
