Will this S&B 173 Grain SPCE ammunition cycle properly in my 7x57R break-action combination gun?

No, this ammunition is strictly engineered for standard rimless 7x57mm Mauser rifle chambers. It is not compatible with the rimmed 7x57R variant commonly found in European break-action combination guns.

What is the recommended maximum effective engagement range for the 173-grain SPCE projectile on deer and pigs?

This round is best kept under 300 metres for hunting applications. While the manufacturer lists a zero of 148 metres, the heavy 173-grain weight and 725 m/s muzzle velocity result in a noticeable trajectory drop beyond 300 metres compared to lighter, polymer-tipped options.

Are the factory brass cases suitable for handloading after being fired?

Yes, these cartridges feature reloadable boxer-primed factory brass cases. This allows you to safely deprime, resize, and reload the brass for extended use once fired.

What licence do I need to purchase and possess this ammunition in Australia?

In Australia, you must hold a valid Category B firearms licence or an equivalent state-level licence endorsed for centrefire rifles to purchase and possess this centrefire ammunition. Online orders must comply with state dangerous goods freight regulations and typically require pickup at a licensed firearms dealer.

7x57 Mauser Ammo - Sellier & Bellot V330932

The Sellier & Bellot 7x57 Mauser SPCE 173 Grain ammunition (SKU: V330932) is a factory-loaded centrehead hunting cartridge engineered for bolt-action and single-shot rifles chambered in standard rimless 7x57mm Mauser. Featuring a heavy 173-grain (11.20-gram) Semi-Jacketed Soft Point Cutting Edge (SPCE) projectile, this round is optimised for medium-game hunting. Out of a standard 600 mm test barrel, it produces a muzzle velocity of 725 m/s and delivers 2,944 J of muzzle energy, maintaining 1,895 J of energy at 200 metres.

Key Features

SPCE Cutting Edge Profile: Built with a stepped shoulder that mechanically locks the lead core inside the tombac jacket to prevent separation, while cutting a clean, circular entrance hole through hide to facilitate distinct blood tracking.
Heavy-for-Calibre Weight: The 173-grain bullet weight ensures deep penetration on medium game species such as deer, pigs, and goats.
Reloadable Factory Brass: Loaded in standard boxer-primed, reloadable brass cases with an overall cartridge length (OAL) of 77.00 mm.
Ballistic Trajectory: Offers a ballistic coefficient of G1 0.376 (G7 0.189) with a manufacturer Most Recommended Distance (MRD) zero of 148 metres, dropping -54.4 cm at 300 metres.

Who is the S&B Sellier & Bellot 7x57 Mauser 173 Grain Spce Cutting Edge Ammo 20 Rd for?

Deer hunters targeting fallow, red, or rusa deer — requires the 173-grain SPCE projectile's locked-core construction, which drives through hide and bone with 2,374 J of energy remaining at 100 metres to create non-occluding wound channels on medium cervids.
Feral pig and goat hunters operating inside 300 metres — utilises this 7x57 Mauser hunting rifle ammunition for its moderate 725 m/s muzzle velocity and 0.376 G1 ballistic coefficient, ensuring controlled expansion and reliable terminal energy without excessive meat damage inside its 148-metre zeroing profile.

Less suitable for: Long-range shooting past 300 metres, where the round's -54.4 cm drop demands sleeker, polymer-tipped boat-tail cartridges; dangerous thick-skinned game such as scrub bulls or water buffalo requiring solid copper or bonded projectiles; and break-action firearms chambered in the rimmed 7x57R cartridge, which require rimmed ammunition.
