What is the effective hunting range for the S&B 6.5x55 SE 140 Grain SBT ammunition when targeting medium game?

The effective deer-hunting range generally spans 0 to 300 metres. Within this distance, the projectile retains sufficient terminal energy above 1,300 Joules to reliably expand the Sierra GameKing soft-point jacket and deliver clean performance on animals like fallow and red deer.

Will this 6.5x55 SE ammunition cycle correctly in my 6.5 Creedmoor or .260 Remington rifle?

No. This ammunition is chambered strictly for rifles cut for the 6.5x55 SE Swedish Mauser cartridge with standard CIP dimensions. It is physically incompatible with 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC, and .260 Remington chambers due to different case dimensions and taper.

What kind of compliance or licensing do I need to purchase and possess this ammunition in Australia?

As this is centrefire sporting ammunition, electrical and regulatory approvals like SAA/RCM or 240V ratings do not apply. However, purchase in Australia requires a valid state or territory firearms licence endorsing Category B centrefire rifles, and transport must adhere to local dangerous goods guidelines.

How does the Sierra Boat Tail (SBT) projectile perform ballistically out of a standard test barrel?

The 140 grain Sierra GameKing bullet leaves a 600 mm test barrel at a muzzle velocity of 723 m/s generating 2,378 Joules of energy. With a 100-metre zero, it drops approximately 17.4 cm at 200 metres and 61.5 cm at 300 metres, providing a flat trajectory and excellent downrange velocity retention.

6.5x55 Ammunition - Sellier Bellot V330482

The Sellier & Bellot 6.5×55 SE SBT 140 Grain Ammunition is factory-loaded hunting ammunition designed for medium-game stalking and precision field shooting. Featuring the Sierra GameKing® Spitzer Boat Tail (SBT) bullet, this cartridge delivers controlled terminal mushrooming alongside aerodynamic stability. Out of a standard 600 mm test barrel, the 140 grain (9.10 g) projectile produces a muzzle velocity of 723 m/s (2,372 fps) and 2,378 Joules of energy, offering a reliable trajectory profile for centrefire rifle hunters across open Australian terrain.

Key Features

Sierra GameKing® Bullet Profile: Features a tapered boat-tail base and aerodynamic jacket (G1 ballistic coefficient of 0.463; G7 of 0.234) to reduce wind drift and maintain downrange velocity.
Controlled Terminal Expansion: Tapered jacket design ensures progressive expansion and deep penetration through tissue and bone on medium-sized game.
Quality Reloadable Components: Assembled in standard reloadable brass cases fitted with non-corrosive Boxer primers and clean-burning smokeless propellants.
Predictable Ballistics: Factory-tested trajectory delivers 1,672 J of retained energy at 200 metres and 1,386 J at 300 metres, with an MRD zero set at 150 metres.

Who is the S&B Sellier & Bellot 6.5x55 Se Mauser 140 Grain Sbt Sierra Boat Tail Ammo 20 Rd for?

Medium-Game Hunters — Requires consistent terminal penetration and controlled expansion on deer and feral pigs, delivered by this 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser ammunition via a 140 grain Sierra GameKing soft-point bullet leaving the muzzle at 723 m/s.
Long-Range Field Hunters — Needs aerodynamic stability and velocity retention over extended shooting distances, supported by this 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser ammunition's boat-tail design offering a G1 ballistic coefficient of 0.463 supplied in standard 20-round boxes.

Less suitable for: Shots beyond a 300-metre maximum effective threshold where retained terminal energy drops below 1,300 Joules, or rifles chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC, or .260 Remington; for these applications, higher-capacity magnum 6.5 mm centrefire cartridges or platform-specific calibres are required.
